BlueDot continues to grow and as a result we are looking for a VP, Technology to lead, plan, build, maintain and grow BlueDot’s platform technology ecosystem right-sized to product, market and client needs while ensuring the highest standards of performance, reliability, extensibility, security, and quality. This role sits on the senior leadership team and reports directly to the CEO.


Remote role: anywhere in Canada.

BlueDot protects people around the world from infectious diseases using human and artificial intelligence. Our software-as-a-service solution combines medical and public health expertise with advanced data analytics to track, contextualize, and mitigate infectious disease risks. Our global early warning system combines more than 100 datasets with proprietary algorithms to deliver critical insights on the spread of infectious diseases. In December 2019, we flagged an undiagnosed respiratory syndrome in Wuhan, China. In January 2020, we published the world's first scientific paper on COVID-19, accurately predicting its global spread. Our team understands the complexity of the challenge in front of us – and that the urgency to solve the problem has never been greater.

What you will do in more detail:  

   

Software Engineering and Quality Assurance Excellence

  • In collaboration with Product and Scrum Coach, establish baseline metrics (Velocity, Capacity, Quality etc.) and Agile workflow achieving team buy-in to a continuous improvement model.
  • Ensure regular and automated monthly executive reporting 
  • Introduce, educate, coach and mentor leads on best practices for quality built-in approaches including TDD (test-driven development), unit testing, and code management. 

 

Globally Scalable and Secure Cloud Platform

  • Draft, socialize and receive SLT endorsement of a platform technology short/mid/long-term strategy and roadmap, aligned to product roadmap, necessary innovations and capabilities (i.e. data systems, APIs, data science and cognitive services delivery, SaaS and mobile applications), and company growth targets.
  • Lead the cloud migration initiative from architecture strategy through to implementation, migration and roll-out; set clear performance targets across all product and data service areas.
  • Complete a security audit and close all Critical, Major and Minor issues

 

Build an Exceptional Team with Objective-Driven Leadership

  • Assess and evaluate team/skills composition against the product goals and roadmap ensuring immediate gaps are addressed (software, platform architecture and development operations, security, quality assurance, data engineering/science) by the end of first quarter and “A” contributors and appropriate leads in all subject-matter areas.
  • Build a “deputy” philosophy within the team ensuring career path definition and growth objectives for all team members and a de-risked responsibility/accountability matrix for all skill areas.
  • Introduce, mentor, and actively coach all team leads and establish a culture of outcome-based objective-setting for all team members.

 

What you bring to BlueDot: 


  • Passionate for wanting to help make the world healthier, safer, and more prosperous, align with our vision and our values
  • 15+ years experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline
  • 10+ years in a senior software platform technology/global SaaS leadership role (Director or higher) managing and coaching multi-disciplinary teams across Infrastructure/Dev Ops, Software Engineering, and Data Engineering.
  • Proven experience of strategic and implementation leadership with Public/Private Cloud, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Data-as-a-Service, API service models, AI infrastructure and cognitive services infrastructure/frameworks.
  • Proven track record of building data-rich/heavy enterprise transaction-based systems with focus on security, reliability, scalability and performance.
  • Proven experience leading and driving cloud infrastructure systems quality metrics and outcomes. Examples of employing a data-driven approach to monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and addressing infrastructure performance and availably a must.
  • Extensive experience and proven outcomes implementing and scaling Cloud-native architectures for micro services, ML/NLP, and migration strategy from on-premises architecture.
  • Extensive experience establishing and scaling infrastructure for AI/cognitive services offerings atop a data ingestion-rich ecosystem. Must have experience supporting Data Science and Data Engineering practices with scalable cloud infrastructure and computational processing solutions.
  • Domain expertise with DevOps, CI/CD, automation, Big Data and containerization technologies.
  • Agile/Lean certification and experience leading teams in an Agile setting.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting and managing 3rd party technology vendors, technology budgets and investment plans.
  • Experience managing senior executive expectations, developing evolving roadmaps and building business perspective through a technology lens.
  • Collaborative approach with peers and an ability to translate business needs to technology requirements.

We are working fully remotely due to COVID-19 until at least January 2022 – post pandemic we will continue with our remote first culture with the opportunity for a hybrid/flexible office space in downtown Toronto accessible to our team but without the requirement to work from the office.
