Our team at BlueDot is growing! We are looking for a curious Infectious Disease Surveillance Analyst who is passionate about public health to join our team to help support our ongoing data collection. 

 

You will work closely with BlueDot’s epidemiologists, clinicians, ecologists, spatial analysts and members of our Data Services team as it relates to event-based surveillance and natural-language processing (NLP) machine learning methods. In addition, you will support ad-hoc research tasks and requests for information as they relate to infectious disease surveillance.

 

Contributing to our global surveillance using our operationalized early warning system you will be supporting three core activities: 

 

  • Review of daily infectious disease media reports; 
  • Collating and tabulating data and providing summary reports; and 
  • Evaluating and providing feedback for our internal surveillance user-interface tool

 What you will do in more detail:

 

  • Critically evaluate and prioritize infectious disease media reports on a daily basis
  • Develop infectious disease events of importance for internal publication and review
  • Provide feedback on our internal Surveillance application and recommend improvements
  • Interpret analytic results and translate results into meaningful outputs (eg. reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations, etc.)
  • Maintain documentation on data and methods as they correspond to established Knowledge Management practices and processes
  • Complete ad-hoc research tasks and requests for information
  • Collaborating with team members with a variety of expertise 

 

What you bring to BlueDot:

 

  • Currently pursuing or recent completion of a degree in Biology, Health Sciences, or Public Health (B.A., or B.Sc.)
  • 2 years demonstrated research experience highly preferred
  • General knowledge in infectious disease and public health; clinical attributes of infectious disease; health geography; spatial epidemiology; and/or population health 
  • Confident in the ingestion, categorization, and interpretation of large databases
  • Strong ability to search and critically evaluate primary literature and media reports
  • Some experience in quantitative methods and statistics, exposure to health informatics and basic epidemiological measures an asset
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a friendly and supportive multidisciplinary environment 
  • Independent problem-solving skills and able to engage in self-directed learning
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail-oriented
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
